Types of drop deck trailers

Drop deck trailers have two basic types:

  • Single Drop Step deck trailers are also called single drop trailers. They look just like flatbed trailers, but have two deck levels instead of one. They also come with ramps for loading and unloading purposes.
  • Double Drop Deck trailers are used for freight which is large in size. The middle portion of the trailer is lower than the axles of the trailer, enabling oversized cargo to be carried by the trailer. A third axle, called the flip axle, is used for balancing excess load.

What do drop deck trailers carry?

Drop deck trailers are used to transport heavy equipment and machinery. Tractors, cranes, bulldozers, and other kinds of heavy loads can easily be transported by these trailers.

They are also used for hauling loads which are too tall to be transported by traditional flatbed trailers because of legal height limits. Due to the lowered deck, these trailers can also carry more goods than conventional trailers.

A drop deck with Retractable Goose Neck (RGN) can enable machines with wheels to be easily pushed onto the lower deck. This is made possible by detaching the lower deck from the front deck.
