Various industries, including construction, utilize these devices for better handling of routine tasks and timely completion. In line with the variety of applications requiring these machines, cranes are available in a number of sizes, styles and other specifications. Differently configured cranes are used according to the weight that needs to be lifted and available area for movement on site. Jib cranes, a group of specialized machines, are more popular because of their reliability in industrial settings. Let’s learn a bit more about these commonly used cranes.

Introducing the jib cranes

Jib cranes are a group of machines that have a rotating boom. It is attached to a vertical mast, supporting a hoist which may be operated pneumatically or electricity. Apart from being used in construction, these are also used on commercial and military ships. The most common type of jib crane used is the self-supported, floor mounted conformation. These cranes have become very important in various settings, as they reduce waiting times by relieving the overhead cranes.

Form and function

A jib crane consists of a pillar which is either fixed to a wall or mounted on the floor. This pillar supports the horizontal boom or jib with its movable hoist. The load is lifted or lowered with the help of this hoist and a drum or lift-wheel, with a rope or chain wrapped around it. The drum is driven pneumatically or electrically, which can be operated manually. The lifting medium can be a chain, a wire cable or a fiber rope. It lifts the load with the help of a hook attached with it.

Types of jib cranes

Original illustration unavailable: Floor Mounted Jib CranesThree types of jib cranes are commonly used across different industries:
  • Floor-mounted jib cranes - These are the most common type of jib cranes used in industry. These are self-supported with a vertical mast mounted on its concrete foundation. Generally used to share workload of main cranes, they are manually operated and can rotate 360°.
  • Wall-mounted jib cranes (fixed) - These cranes are mounted on walls in a horizontal fashion. To support this conformation, they have a RCC column bracket instead of a vertical shaft. The hoist mechanism is the same as floor mounted models, except the absence of a vertical boom. A maximum of 200°rotation is allowed by the bracket, covering the area nearby without obstruction when at floor level.
  • Wall-mounted jib cranes (travelling) – Its construction is quite similar to fixed type models, but these are able to cover lengthwise area without obstruction at floor level. The columns are specially designed, allowing it to move along a runway track instead of merely rotating.
